Hornets Up at the Half, But Fall Short to NJIT 75-62

DOVER, DE --The Delaware State women's basketball team went into the half beating NJIT 35-27, but could not pull away in the second half and fell 75-62 to the Highlanders at home Monday.

The Hornets (3-12) had three players score in double figures, led by Amya Scott, who had 21 points and four assists. Liliana Harrison added 14 points, nine rebounds and two blocks off of the bench and Nevaeh Reaves chipped in as well with 10 points and three steals.

Delaware State took advantage of great ball movement in Monday's game, piling up 15 assists on 26 made field goals. Individually, Nykesha Sanders dished out the most for the Hornets with four assists.

 

How It Happened

Delaware State started off strong, putting together a 17-14 lead heading into the second quarter.

Delaware State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 9:20 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Harrison, to increase its lead to 25-14. The Highlanders cut into that lead, but the Hornets still enjoyed a 35-27 advantage heading into halftime. Delaware State dominated in the paint, scoring 16 of its 18 points close to the basket.

Delaware State then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Highlanders 51-48 entering the fourth. Delaware State played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 13 points in the paint.

Delaware State kept the Highlanders from increasing their lead before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Harrison's jumper, to seize a 55-52 lead with 6:57 to go in the contest. NJIT re-asserted control, outscoring the Hornets 23-7 the rest of the way to hand Delaware State the 75-62 loss. Delaware State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.
