Defensive Efoort Falls Short, Hornets Fall to Detroit Mercy 59-46

NEW ORLEANS, LA --The Delaware State women's basketball team held Detroit Mercy to just 38.8 percent shooting from the field, but fell 59-46 to the Titans at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in Devlin Fieldhouse Sunday.

Jermesha Frierson led the Hornets (3-11) with 18 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Toni Smith tacked on six points and four steals off of the bench and Liliana Harrison helped out with six points.

Delaware State forced 28 Detroit Mercy turnovers while committing 21 themselves in Sunday's game. The Hornets turned those takeaways into 22 points on the offensive end of the floor. Smith's four steals led the way for Delaware State.

 

How It Happened

Delaware State started out the scoring by going on a 7-0 run, culminating in a three from Nykesha Sanders, to take an early lead with 8:14 left in the first quarter. Detroit Mercy then responded to tie things up at 13-13 heading into the second quarter. Delaware State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of its 13 points close to the basket.

The Titans then took control in the second quarter and the Hornets entered haltime behind 37-17.

Delaware State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Hornets faced a 52-28 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Delaware State played well near the basket, scoring six of its 11 points in the paint.

Detroit Mercy kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 59-31 advantage before Delaware State went on a 13-0 run, finished off by Frierson's layup, to shrink the deficit to 59-44 with 12 seconds to go in the contest. The Hornets kept their comeback going, but Detroit Mercy managed to hold on for the 59-46 win. Delaware State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 18 points in the paint.
