Delaware State shoots 54.5 percent from deep, defeats Holy Family 73-61

DOVER, DE --The Delaware State men's basketball team shot 54.5 percent from deep on the way to a 73-61 victory over the Holy Family Tigers at home Sunday.

The Hornets (5-9) had three players score in double figures, led by Ponce James, who had 16 points, six assists and two steals. Zion Bethea tacked on 14 points off of the bench and Ademar Santos helped out with 11 points.

Delaware State shared the ball well in Sunday's game, racking up 16 assists on 28 made field goals. Corey Perkins' six assists led the Hornets.

The Delaware State defense held Holy Family shooters to just 40 percent from the field. The Tigers did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only nine offensive rebounds and scored 13 second chance points.

How It Happened

After falling behind 21-14, Delaware State went on a 10-0 run with 11:32 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Bethea, to take a 24-21 lead. The Hornets then added six points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 43-34 advantage. Delaware State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 24 of its 43 points close to the basket.

Delaware State started tacking on points in the second half almost immediately, going on a 6-0 run, finished off by James' jumper, to grow the lead to 49-34 with 17:09 to go in the contest. The Tigers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hornets still cruised the rest of the way for the 73-61 win. Delaware State capitalized on 10 Holy Family turnovers in the period, collecting eight points off those turnovers.
