Hornets rally, but come up short to American 66-63

WASHINGTON, DC --The Delaware State women's basketball team took a 52-48 advantage into the fourth quarter, but could not hang on and fell 66-63 to the American Eagles on the road Saturday.

The Hornets (1-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Mahogany Cottingham, who had 18 points, six rebounds and three steals. Aniyah Jones added 13 points from the bench and Amya Scott helped out with 12 points off the bench.

Delaware State forced 13 American turnovers. The Hornets turned those takeaways into 16 points on the other end of the floor. Cottingham's three steals led the way for Delaware State.
 

How It Happened

Delaware State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 17-11 at the end of the first quarter.

Delaware State kept the Eagles from increasing their lead before going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Kaitlyn Adams, to tie the game at 31, a score that would hold until halftime. Delaware State dominated in the paint, scoring 18 of its 20 points close to the basket.

Delaware State started the third quarter on a high note, going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Nykesha Sanders, to grab a 37-31 lead with 8:07 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Eagles had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Hornets still entered the fourth quarter with a 52-48 edge. Delaware State played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 21 points in the paint.

 Delaware State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its 11 points in the paint.

» The Delaware State bench came alive by adding 33 points to its scoring output.
