DOVER, DE --The Delaware State women's basketball team kept Felician to just 8.3 percent from deep in a 1-for-12 shooting performance on the way to a 66-55 victory over the Golden Falcons at home Wednesday.

The Hornets (1-0) had three players score in double figures, led by Amya Scott, who had 18 points and two steals. Mahogany Cottingham tacked on 12 points and six rebounds and Nevaeh Reaves helped out with 10 points and two steals.

Led by Ericka Huggins' three offensive rebounds, Delaware State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 12 boards that resulted in five second chance points.

The Delaware State defense held Felician shooters to only 27.9 percent from the field, including 8.3 percent from three-point range.

How It Happened
After jumping out to a 4-3 advantage, Delaware State went on a 7-0 run with 7:20 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Liliana Harrison, to increase its lead to 11-3. The Hornets then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 17-16 advantage. Delaware State got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for seven of its 17 total points.

The Hornets used the second period to increase their lead and entered halftime with a 32-29 edge. Delaware State saw non-starters score six of its 15 total points off the bench in the quarter.

Delaware State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a three from Scott, to expand its lead further to 41-31 with 6:13 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Hornets added one point to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 53-42 edge. Delaware State played well near the basket, scoring 16 of its 21 points in the paint.

Delaware State kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run to grow the lead to 58-44 with 6:55 to go in the contest. The Golden Falcons narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hornets still cruised the rest of the way for the 66-55 win. Delaware State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring six of its 13 total points.
