Hornets fall 76-59 to Hampton

HAMPTON, VA --The Delaware State women's basketball team got a 32-point performance from the bench, but fell 76-59 to the Hampton Lady Pirates on the road Monday.

The Hornets (3-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Amya Scott, who had 13 points and five steals. Jermesha Frierson added 11 points and Liliana Harrison chipped in as well with 10 points off the bench.

Led by Ericka Huggins' four offensive rebounds, Delaware State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 16 boards that resulted in 22 second chance points.

The Delaware State defense was a problem in Monday's game, forcing 17 Hampton turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 14 points on the other end of the floor. Scott's five steals led the way individually for the Hornets.
 

How It Happened

Delaware State started out the scoring by going on a 10-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Aniyah Jones, to take an early lead with 5:51 left in the first quarter. The Hornets then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 19-16 advantage. Delaware State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 19 points close to the basket.

The Hornets could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 33-24.

Delaware State came out of halftime on fire, going on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Jones, to tie things up at 33 with 6:24 to go in the third. The Hornets could not advance their rally further as the Lady Pirates took a 54-43 lead into the fourth quarter. Delaware State played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 19 points in the paint.

Delaware State came out of the third quarter break clicking on all cylinders, going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Zyan Reynolds' layup, to shrink the deficit to 54-51 with 7:33 to go in the contest. Hampton responded and outscored the Hornets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 76-59. Delaware State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring six of its 16 total points.
