Defensive effort earns Delaware State a victory over Saint Mary's (MD) 83-38

DOVER, DE --The Delaware State women's basketball team held Saint Mary's (MD) to just 18.2 percent from deep in a 2-for-11 shooting performance on the way to an 83-38 victory over the Seahawks at home Saturday.

The Hornets (3-4) had five players score in double figures, led by Iman Addison, who had 13 points and two steals. Jermesha Frierson tacked on 13 points, six rebounds, eight assists and five steals and Mahogany Cottingham helped out with 11 points.

Delaware State shared the ball well in Saturday's game, racking up 20 assists on 36 made field goals. Frierson's eight assists paced the Hornets and Amya Scott also helped out with three assists of her own.

The Delaware State defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 25 Saint Mary's (MD) turnovers while committing 14. Those takeaways turned into 27 points on the offensive end of the floor. Frierson's five steals led the way individually for the Hornets.

 

How It Happened

After jumping out to an 11-9 advantage, Delaware State went on a 5-0 run with 4:31 left in the first quarter to increase its lead to 16-9. The Hornets then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with an 18-14 advantage. Delaware State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 18 points close to the basket.

Delaware State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 9-0 run starting at the 8:07 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Frierson, to increase its lead to 27-16. The Hornets proceeded to tack on four points to that lead and enjoyed a 40-25 advantage heading into halftime. Delaware State dominated in the paint, scoring 16 of its 22 points close to the basket.

Delaware State wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 12-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Liliana Harrison, to expand its lead further to 52-25 with 6:28 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Hornets added eight points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 67-32 edge. Delaware State played well near the basket, scoring 18 of its 27 points in the paint.

Delaware State kept its lead intact before going on an 11-0 run, finished off by Channing Williams' three, to grow the lead to 83-38 with 1:13 to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Delaware State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 16 points in the paint.
