James' buzzer-beater leads Delaware State past Kean 66-64

DOVER, DE --Ponce James hit a buzzer-beating shot with just one second left in the game to lead the Delaware State men's basketball team past the Kean Cougars 66-64 at home Thursday.

James led the Hornets (2-4) with 17 points and three steals. Miles Webb added eight points and nine rebounds and Jalen St Clair chipped in as well with three points, five assists and three steals off of the bench.

Delaware State utilized excellent ball movement in Thursday's game, piling up 17 assists on 27 made field goals. StClair's five assists led the distribution list for the Hornets and Corey Perkins also contributed with four assists of his own.

The Delaware State defense caused its share of mistakes in Thursday's game, forcing 13 Kean turnovers while committing 10. Those takeaways turned into 15 points on the other end of the floor. St Clair's three steals led the way individually for the Hornets.

How It Happened

After falling behind 25-24, Delaware State went on a 7-0 run with 4:51 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Muazibini Adamu, to take a 31-25 lead. The Hornets then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 38-37 advantage. Delaware State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 24 of its 38 points close to the basket.

Kean proceeded to take a 62-52 lead before Delaware State went on a 10-0 run to even the score at 62 all with 4:12 to go in the contest. The Hornets kept the rally going and took the lead for good on James' layup with 00:01 left to grab the 66-64 victory. Delaware State took care of business in the paint, recording 16 of its 28 points in the lane.
