WEST HAVEN, CT --The Delaware State men's basketball team got a 23-point performance from the bench, but fell 65-52 to the New Haven Chargers on the road Saturday.
The Hornets (0-4) had three players score in double figures, led by Ponce James, who had 13 points and three steals. Zion Bethea tacked on 11 points and Miles Webb helped out with 10 points from the bench.
Delaware State forced 17 New Haven turnovers while committing 11 themselves in Saturday's game. The Hornets turned those takeaways into 21 points on the offensive end of the floor. Kareem Watson's three steals led the way for Delaware State.
How It Happened
After falling behind 18-10, Delaware State went on a 6-0 run with 8:33 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Webb, to narrow its deficit to 18-16. New Haven answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Hornets down 30-22 entering halftime.
New Haven kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 40-26 advantage before Delaware State went on a 6-0 run, finished off by James' layup, to shrink the deficit to 40-32 with 14:44 to go in the contest. New Haven responded and outscored the Hornets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 65-52. Delaware State took care of business in the paint, recording 16 of its 30 points in the lane.
