Hornets Cage Bears in 74-58 Win Against Bloomfield

Delaware State Shoot 50 Percent From the Deep

DOVER, DE --The Delaware State women's basketball team shot 50 percent from deep on the way to a 74-58 victory against the at home Wednesday.

The Hornets (2-2) had four players score in double figures, led by Mahogany Cottingham, who had 17 points and three steals. Ericka Huggins added 13 points and seven rebounds off of the bench and Aniyah Jones helped out with 12 points and two steals from the bench.

The Delaware State offense was very productive from beyond the arc, pouring in eight threes on 16 attempts. Jones was the most prolific shooter for the Hornets, draining four treys in the contest.

Delaware State's defense held to only 19 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 33.3 percent from the field. The Hornets also limited Bianca Ellis to 1-of-10 shooting from downtown and three points in the game.

 

How It Happened

After falling behind 13-6, Delaware State went on a 6-0 run with 1:00 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Jones, to narrow its deficit to 13-12. answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Hornets down 16-14 entering the second quarter.

Delaware State fought back to tie the game at 25-25 before going on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a three from Nevaeh Reaves, to take a 32-25 lead. The Hornets kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 37-30 advantage heading into halftime. Delaware State forced nine turnovers in the period and turned them into nine points.

Delaware State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Cottingham, to expand its lead further to 48-37 with 5:02 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Hornets added six points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 62-45 edge. Delaware State knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 25 total points.

The Hornets then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Delaware State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 12 points in the paint.
