MEMORIAL HALL, --Robert Smith scored 20 points, but the Delaware State men's basketball team fell to the Norfolk State Spartans 73-64 at home Monday.

The Hornets (7-9, 0-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Smith, who had 20 points and two steals. Muneer Newton added 14 points and eight rebounds and Martaz Robinson helped out with 10 points.

Delaware State grabbed 35 rebounds in Monday's game compared to Norfolk State's 33, led by Alston Andrews' 10 boards. The Hornets also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 11 rebounds into 12 second chance points.

The Delaware State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Monday's game, forcing 13 Norfolk State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into six points on the other end of the floor. Smith's two steals led the way individually for the Hornets.

How It Happened

Delaware State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 42-30 heading into halftime.

Delaware State came out of halftime clicking on all cylinders, going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Smith's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 42-36 with 17:54 to go in the contest. Norfolk State responded and outscored the Hornets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 73-64. Delaware State made the most of four offensive rebounds to tack on six second chance points out of 34 total in the period.
