Hornets Fall to Hawks 66-46

PRINCESS ANNE, MD --The Delaware State women's basketball team held Maryland-Eastern Shore to just 18.8 percent from 3-point range in a 3-for-16 shooting performance, but fell 66-46 to the Hawks on the road Saturday.

The Hornets (3-15, 0-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Kyra Lawrence, who had 13 points. Mahogany Cottingham added 11 points and Kiarra Mcelrath helped out with 10 points and two steals.

Led by Lawrence's three offensive rebounds, Delaware State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in 10 second chance points.

The Delaware State defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 19 Maryland-Eastern Shore turnovers while committing 17. Those takeaways turned into 13 points on the offensive end of the floor. Najah Lane led the way individually for the Hornets with three steals.
 

How It Happened

Delaware State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 23-6 at the end of the first quarter.

The Hornets and Hawks then played an even second quarter making the halftime score 34-17 in favor of Maryland-Eastern Shore.

Delaware State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Hornets faced a 52-34 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Delaware State turned four offensive rebounds into four second chance points on the way to scoring 17 total points in the quarter.

Maryland-Eastern Shore kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 66-39 advantage before Delaware State went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Lane's layup, to shrink the deficit to 66-46 with zero seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Delaware State took advantage of seven Maryland-Eastern Shore turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways.
