BUIES CREEK, North Carolina --Campbell mounted a five-play, 79-yard scoring drive, culminating in a two-yard touchdown reception from to with :42 left in the ballgame, as Delaware State lost 44-41 in heartbreaking fashion to the Fighting Camels on Saturday afternoon at Barker-Lane Stadium/Ed Gore Field.
The Fighting Camels improved to 2-3 on the season while the Hornets dropped to 1-4.
Marqui Adams led Delaware State's passing attack with 252 yards through the air, tossing four touchdowns and one interception.
Jaden Sutton totaled 198 yards to lead the Hornets' ground attack and added two touchdowns in the game, picking up 9.9 yards per carry along the way. Adams also tacked on 36 yards on the ground.
Kristian Tate reeled in three catches for 88 yards and one score. NyGhee Lolley got in on the action in the passing game as well, hauling in one ball for 75 yards and one touchdown.
Eric Montes added four tackles and Jeffery Broughton had four tackles in the loss.
Offensively, Delaware State had an outstanding day, racking up 517 total yards, 265 on the ground and 252 through the air, while averaging 8.2 yards per play and out-gaining Campbell. The Delaware State offense did a good job keeping drives alive, converting on 50 percent of third-down attempts. The Hornets also went 1-for-1 on fourth down.
Defensively, Delaware State held up fairly well against the Campbell rushing attack, holding the Fighting Camels to 111 yards on the ground.
Delaware State took care of business in the red zone, scoring three times on three trips inside Campbell's 20-yard line, with all of those scores being touchdowns.
How It Happened
Campbell jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but Delaware State responded to tie it up at 7-7 with 10:44 left in the first quarter.The Hornets proceeded to break the 7-7 tie with a 62-yard rushing touchdown from Sutton, making the score 14-7.
A score from Campbell cut the lead to 14-10 before Delaware State scored again with 11:14 left in the second quarter and pushed its lead to 21-10.The Hornets continued to build their advantage after Campbell closed the gap to 21-20, scoring again to go on top 28-20.
After Campbell took a 31-28 lead, Delaware State responded with to a 75-yard touchdown pass from Adams to Lolley to retake the lead at 35-31 with 11:39 left in the fourth quarter.The Fighting Camels answered with six points to take the lead before the Hornets reclaimed it on a 15-yard touchdown run from Sutton, which brought the score to 41-37 in favor of Delaware State. Delaware State didn't score again and Campbell added seven more points to finish off the scoring.
