DOVER --The Delaware State volleyball team could not overcome an opposing Revolutionaries offense Saturday at home falling to George Washington in three sets (25-27, 21-25, 22-25).
The non-conference loss dropped Delaware State to 3-9 on the season.
The Hornets offense was paced by Gerren Tomlin, who finished with 11 kills on the day, and by Valeria Otero, who had 11 while hitting .273. got 17 digs from Paige Ahakuelo to lead them defensively.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Hornets fell in a tight first set, losing 27-25 in a game that was tied six times and had three lead changes.
SET 2 | A 25-21 set-two loss put Delaware State in a 2-0 hole in the match. The Hornets came up short in a back-and-forth set, losing in a stanza that featured nine lead changes and was tied 10 times. Neither team led by more than four points along the way.
SET 3 | Delaware State could not win the third set and was swept by George Washington. The Hornets came up short by the score of 25-22. George Washington grabbed the advantage for good at 22-21 in a set that was tied up six times before the Revolutionaries took over in the second half of the stanza.
Match Two
Gerren Tomlin and Valeria Otero each notched double-doubles to help propel the Delaware State volleyball team to a 3-1 victory (24-26, 25-18, 25-21, 25-21) against the NJIT Highlanders Saturday at home at Memorial Hall.
The out-of-conference victory improved Delaware State's overall record to 4-9 on the season.
The Hornets were led by the double-doubles from Otero, who had 10 kills and 13 digs, and Tomlin, who had 14 kills and 20 digs. Martyna Kmuk added 12 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Paige Ahakuelo chipped in for with 15 digs to go with two blocks from Hannah Sanders.
How It Happened
SET 1 | Despite a pinpoint serving effort, the Hornets fell in the first set 26-24. Delaware State totaled six aces in the set loss.
SET 2 | Delaware State responded to pick up a 25-18 victory in set two, evening the match at one set apiece. The Hornets never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 14-13 in a set that featured nine ties and five lead changes. The Hornets racked up 17 kills over the course of the set.
SET 3 | Delaware State won again in the third set to go up two sets to one. The Hornets the set the third set 25-21. Delaware State took the lead for good at 18-17 in a set that featured 10 ties and five lead changes. The Hornets racked up 19 kills over the course of the set.
SET 4 | Delaware State finished off the match with a 25-21 fourth-set victory, winning their third set in a row. The Hornets trailed by as many as six points, but took the lead for good at 22-21 in a set that showcased three lead changes before the Hornets took over in the second half of the stanza. The Hornets win came in a stanza where 18 of their 25 points came via the kill.
