Hornets Come Back From 2-0 Hole, To Take Down Harvard in 5 Sets

DOVER --The No. Delaware State volleyball team rallied from down two sets to none to earn a come-from-behind 3-2 victory (24-26, 25-27, 25-23, 25-15, 15-13) over the No. Harvard Crimson Friday at home at Memorial Hall.

The non-conference victory improved Delaware State's overall record to 3-8 on the season.

The Hornets were led by double-doubles from both Valeria Otero, who had 10 kills and 17 digs, and Gerren Tomlin, who had 14 kills and 12 digs. Martyna Kmuk also added 13 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Emma Crakow chipped in for with 11 digs to go with three blocks from Kmuk.


How It Happened

SET 1 | The Hornets couldn't endure a furious Harvard rally in the first set, falling 26-24 after leading by eight points at 14-6 earlier in the set.

SET 2 | A 27-25 set-two loss put Delaware State behind 2-0 in the match. The Hornets battled back from a seven-point 19-12 deficit, but Harvard held on to take the set.

SET 3 | After dropping sets one and two, Delaware State fought back to win the third set and make it a 2-1 match. The Hornets led from the opening point on in the set to secure a 25-23 victory. Delaware State opened up as much as a three point lead at 21-18 before finishing off the set. Delaware State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking five Harvard attacks in the stanza.

SET 4 | Delaware State then kept the comeback train rolling, winning the fourth set 25-15 to bring the match level at two sets apiece. The Hornets scored first and never trailed in the set to secure the victory. Delaware State finished up the stanza on a strong note, claiming its biggest lead, 10 points, to finish off the set.

SET 5 | Delaware State dropped the first two sets, but put together an epic comeback to win the last three sets, culminating in a 15-13 fifth-set victory, and take the match 3-2. The Hornets endured a back-and-forth final set to emerge victorious in a stanza that featured one lead change and was tied nine times. Neither team led by more than two points in the set.
