Hornets finish 1-2 in UCONN Tournament

STORRS, CT --The Delaware State volleyball team lost to the UConn Huskies in three sets (17-25, 20-25, 16-25) Friday on the road at Harry A Gampel Pavilion.

The non-conference loss moved Delaware State to 1-6 on the season.

Aaliyah Mitchell finished with 10 kills on the day to lead the Hornets offense while finishing with a hitting percentage of .286. got 8 digs from Paige Ahakuelo to lead them defensively.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Hornets found themselves in an early deficit, dropping a tough first set 25-17. Delaware State trailed by as many as eight points as UConn grabbed the advantage for good at 17-16 in a set that was tied up four times before the Huskies took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 2 | Delaware State then dropped the second set 25-20 to fall behind in the match two sets to none. The Hornets fell behind on the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before dropping the set.

SET 3 | Delaware State couldn't prolong the match and lost in set number three. The Hornets lost a tough set 25-16. Delaware State trailed by as many as nine points as UConn grabbed the advantage for good at 5-4 in a set that was tied up four times before the Huskies took over the lead.

 

STORRS, CT --The Delaware State volleyball team needed just four sets (25-23, 16-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-15) to knock off the Albany (NY) Great Danes Saturday at Harry A Gampel Pavilion.

The out-of-conference victory boosted the Hornets' overall record to 2-6 on the season.

The Hornets attack was paced by Gerren Tomlin, who finished with 19 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .316, and by Aaliyah Mitchell, who had 12. Defensively, had two players reach double figures in digs as Paige Ahakuelo had 10 and Morgan Allen had 10. From the front row, Hannah Sanders contributed six blocks and Ana Cambraia added five rejections.

SET 1 | The Hornets opened up an early one set to none lead, winning a close first set 25-23. Delaware State trailed by as many as six points, but grabbed the advantage for good at 24-23 in a set that showcased four lead changes before the Hornets took over in the second half of the stanza. got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked five Albany (NY) attacks in the stanza.

SET 3 | Delaware State then got back on the winning track, emerging victorious in set three and taking a two sets to one lead in the match. The Hornets trailed by as many as six points, but took the lead for good at 24-23 in a set that showcased two lead changes before Delaware State took over in the second half of the stanza. They then carried that lead to a 25-23 set win. The Delaware State offense also got a boost from four aces in the stanza. Delaware State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking five Albany (NY) attacks in the stanza.

SET 4 | Delaware State kept the momentum going, claiming the match win with a 25-15 set-four victory. The Hornets grabbed control of the set at 3-2 and held the lead the rest of the way. Delaware State ended the stanza on a high note by opening up its biggest lead, 10 points, to finish off the set. Delaware State also supplemented their offense with four aces in the set.

Alondra Maldonado finished with eight kills on the day to lead the Hornets attack. got 11 digs from Morgan Allen to lead them defensively.

SET 2 | A 25-12 set-two loss put Delaware State behind two sets to none in the match. Delaware State trailed by as many as 13 points as Dartmouth grabbed the advantage for good at 9-8 in a set that was knotted up three times before the Big Green took over the lead.

SET 3 | Dartmouth finished off the sweep with a set-three win. The Hornets came up short in a back-and-forth battle, losing 28-26 in a set that featured eight lead changes and was tied 16 times. Neither team had a lead of more than three points along the way.
