HARRISONBURG, VA --The Delaware State volleyball team fell to the Stony Brook Seawolves in five sets (18-25, 27-25, 20-25, 25-23, 5-15) Friday at JMU Convocation Center.
The non-conference loss dropped Delaware State to 0-1 on the season.
The Hornets were led by a double-double from Valeria Otero, who registered 11 kills and 12 digs on the day. Alondra Maldonado also added 13 kills to help the offense.Morgan Allen also pitched in with five in the contest. On the defensive end, Naz Tuncay chipped in for with 19 digs to go with four blocks from Hannah Sanders.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Hornets found themselves in an early hole, dropping a tough first set 25-18. Delaware State trailed by as many as seven points as Stony Brook grabbed the advantage for good at 5-4 in a set that was tied up four times before the Seawolves took control.
SET 2 | Delaware State fought back from a first-set loss to take the second set 27-25, tying the match at 1-1. The Hornets persevered in a back-and-forth set to win in a stanza that featured five lead changes and was tied 13 times. Neither team led by more than four points along the way.
SET 3 | Stony Brook went ahead 2-1 in the match after defeating the Hornets in set three. The Hornets couldn't persevere past a furious Stony Brook rally, falling 25-20 after leading by eight points at 13-5 earlier in the set.
SET 4 | Delaware State then responded to win the fourth set 25-23 to force a fifth set. The Hornets persevered in a back-and-forth set to win in a stanza that featured five lead changes and was tied 10 times. Neither team was able to grab a lead larger than four points along the way. Delaware State got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four Stony Brook attacks in the stanza.
SET 5 | Delaware State came up short in a back-and-forth match, winning the second and fourth sets, but losing the first, third and fifth, which they dropped by the score of 15-5, to fall in the match. The Hornets fell behind on the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way.
Match Two
The Delaware State volleyball team lost to the JMU Dukes in three sets (17-25, 15-25, 26-28) Friday on the road at JMU Convocation Center.
The non-conference loss moved Delaware State to 0-2 on the season.
Aaliyah Mitchell finished with 10 kills on the day to lead the Hornets offense while finishing with a hitting percentage of .368.Gerren Tomlin also pitched in with five in the contest. got seven digs from Valeria Otero to lead them defensively.

SET 3 | JMU finished the sweep with a set-three victory. Despite impressive serving, the Hornets fell in the set by the score of 28-26. Delaware State notched five aces in the loss.
