GAME 1 | Delaware State 12, Maryland-Eastern Shore 8
DOVER, DE --Senior Wilfredo Mendez collected three extra base hits to help lead the Delaware State Hornets past the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks 12-8 on Saturday.
Sophomore Kieran Etwaru got the win for Delaware State (18-24, ). The right-hander went four innings, giving up eight runs, seven earned, on 10 hits, allowing four walks and striking out five. Freshman Michael Lane also pitched well, going five shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking one and striking out seven.
Mendez's three extra base hits were the highlight of a 3-for-5 day, and included two doubles, a home run and two RBI. Sophomore Joey Current put together a standout performance at the dish as well, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a walk and two RBI. Senior Krew Bouldin also chipped in for the Hornets, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a home run, two walks and two RBI.
Trailing 5-0, the Hornets first put runs on the board in the first inning. Delaware State got an RBI single from freshman Jaryn Sample, scoring senior Jancarlos Colon from second base.
The Hawks expanded their lead to 6-1 before the Hornets offense got back to work, taking the lead in the second. The Delaware State offense exploded for seven runs, highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Current, which brought the score to 8-6 in favor of the Hornets.
Delaware State kept Maryland-Eastern Shore without a run before building their lead to 9-6 the following inning.
The Hawks gained ground, closing the gap to 9-8 until Delaware State added some insurance in the fourth. The Hornets drove home two runs, including one on a solo homer off the bat of Bouldin, bringing the score to 11-8 in favor of Delaware State.
The Hornets held Maryland-Eastern Shore scoreless before expanding their lead to 12-8 in the seventh inning. Delaware State picked up a run on Mendez's leadoff home run off of junior E. Elliott. The score remained 12-8 for the rest of the game, as the Hornets coasted to the win. Maryland-Eastern Shore was led offensively by junior Blackiston, who went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Elliott led the Hawks pitching staff, throwing four innings of one-run ball.
GAME 2 | Delaware State 21, Maryland-Eastern Shore 12
DOVER, DE --Sophomore Evan Bouldin collected five hits to help lead the Delaware State Hornets past the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks 21-12 on Saturday.
Freshman Ricardo Gonzalez started on the mound and picked up the win for Delaware State (19-24, ). The right-hander went 2.1 innings, giving up eight runs, six earned, on eight hits. Bouldin also made an impact on the mound for the Hornets, starting the ballgame and throwing two scoreless innings while allowing no hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.
In addition to his five hits, Bouldin had three doubles and four RBI to lead the Hornets. Senior Krew Bouldin put together a standout day at the dish as well, going 3-for-3 with a double, a home run, three walks and four RBI. Senior Kodai Yaoita also chipped in for Delaware State, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a home run, a walk and four RBI.
The Hornets scored in six different innings on the way to victory. Delaware State broke a 9-9 tie and took the lead for good at 10-9 in the fifth inning on sophomore Evan Bouldin's one-out RBI double. Maryland-Eastern Shore was led offensively by junior Sadler Jr., who went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Junior C. Rieben led the Hawks pitching staff, throwing two innings of one-run ball.
