DOVER, DE --Sophomore Jack Messmore dominated on Friday, fanning 10 Maryland-Eastern Shore hitters over 7.2 innings of work to help propel the Delaware State Hornets past the Hawks 10-2.
In addition to his 10 strikeouts, Messmore threw 7.2 innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on five hits and walking three for Delaware State (17-24, ). Senior H Davis also made an impact on the mound for the Hornets, throwing 1.1 scoreless innings while allowing no hits, with no walks and one strikeout.
At the plate, the Hornets were led by senior Krew Bouldin, who went 3-for-3 on the day with a double, two home runs, a walk and five RBI. Sophomore Joey Current furnished a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a walk and an RBI. Senior Kodai Yaoita also helped out for Delaware State, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate while adding a double and two RBI.
The Hornets got on the scoreboard first, starting in the third inning. Delaware State's offense started clicking and put up five runs, including a two-run home run off the bat of Bouldin.
The Hornets then held the Hawks scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Senior Evan Harris came across to score the lone run of the inning for Delaware State, which brought the Hornets lead to 6-0.
Delaware State kept Maryland-Eastern Shore without a run before building their lead to 7-0 the following inning. The Hornets notched a run on Current's leadoff home run off sophomore T. Prather.
Delaware State held the Hawks without a run before their offense got in gear the next inning. The inning resulted in three runs for the Hornets, all of them scoring on a three-run homer from Bouldin to left, bringing the Delaware State advantage to 10-0. Maryland-Eastern Shore put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Hornets still coasted to the 10-2 win.
Maryland-Eastern Shore was led offensively by junior D. McNew, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI. Sophomore Cunningham led the Hawks pitching staff, throwing three innings of one-run ball.
