PRINCESS ANNE, MD --Denijsha Wilson scored 23 points and Kiarra Mcelrath had 16 more, but the Hornets fell to the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks 73-63 on the road Thursday.
The Hornets (8-19, 4-10) had two players score in double figures, led by Wilson, who had 23 points and eight rebounds. Mcelrath added 16 points and four assists from the bench and Savannah Brooks added nine points and four assists.
The Delaware State offense was very productive from beyond the arc, making nine threes on 29 attempts. Mcelrath was the most prolific shooter for the Hornets, draining four treys in the contest.
How It Happened
After falling behind 6-0, Delaware State went on a 7-0 run with 6:32 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Noami Zulueta, to take a 7-6 lead. The Hornets then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 15-12.
Delaware State then started off the second quarter by going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a three from Wilson, to take an 18-15 lead. The Hawks then came roaring back to take a 32-30 lead heading into halftime.
Maryland-Eastern Shore continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 57-41 advantage before Delaware State went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Kiarra McElrath, to trim its deficit to 57-47 with 12 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Delaware State knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 17 total points.
Maryland-Eastern Shore kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 73-57 advantage before Delaware State went on a 6-0 run to shrink the deficit to 73-63 with one second to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Delaware State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 16 points in the paint. Delaware State found success from beyond the arc, knocking down nine treys in the game. Delaware State lost despite a 30-25 rebounding advantage.Â
