DOVER, DE --Savannah Brooks and Deyonce Thompson combined to score 31 total points, but the Hornets fell to the Norfolk State Spartans 65-51 at home Saturday.
The Hornets (8-17, 4-8) had two players score in double figures, led by Brooks, who had 18 points. Thompson tacked on 13 points and six rebounds and McKenzie Stewart added eight rebounds and three steals.
Led by Thompson's four offensive rebounds, Delaware State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 12 boards that resulted in seven second chance points.
How It Happened
Delaware State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 27-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The Hornets fought back in the second period, narrowing the deficit to 40-22 by the time halftime rolled around.
After intermission, Delaware State cut its deficit to 45-28 before going on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Brooks, to trim its deficit to 45-38 with 2:53 to go in the third. Norfolk State countered and stretched its lead to 53-39 heading into the fourth. Delaware State knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 17 total points.
Norfolk State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 58-43 advantage before Delaware State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Brooks' three, to shrink the deficit to 58-48 with 5:50 to go in the contest. Norfolk State responded and outscored the Hornets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 65-51. Delaware State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 12 points. Delaware State had a 31-30 rebounding advantage. Delaware State cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 12 offensive boards in the game.Â
