GAME 1 | Niagara 7, Delaware State 1 -- Though they had plenty of opportunities, Delaware State had a hard time cashing them in, leaving 10 Hornets on base in a 7-1 defeat at the hands of the Niagara Purple Eagles on Friday.
Sophomore Jack Messmore (0-1) started and took the loss on the mound for Delaware State (1-5). Kobe Head was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going two shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking none and striking out one.
At the plate, the Hornets were paced by senior Chris Amparo, who went 2-for-4 on the day with an RBI. Senior Welfredo Mendez put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-2 with a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets were trailing 7-0 in the seventh inning when they first put runs on the board. Delaware State got an RBI single from Amparo, scoring senior Jancarlos Colon from third base. The Hornets were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame. Niagara was led offensively by junior Eric Rataczak, who went 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Senior Maximilian Ramirez led the Purple Eagles pitching staff, throwing four scoreless innings.
