Delaware State Earns 57-53 Victory Against Morgan State on Fourth-Quarter Comeback

DOVER, DE --The Delaware State women's basketball team fought back from a 45-43 deficit after the third quarter to knock off the Morgan State Bears 57-53 at home Thursday.

The Hornets (8-16, 4-7) had two players score in double figures, led by Savannah Brooks, who had 17 points and four assists. Deyonce Thompson added 12 points, six rebounds and two steals and McKenzie Stewart added six points, eight rebounds and three steals.

The Delaware State defense was a problem in Thursday's game, forcing 16 Morgan State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 15 points on the offensive end of the floor. Stewart's three steals led the way individually for the Hornets.

How It Happened

After falling behind 14-8, Delaware State went on an 8-0 run with 3:48 left in the first quarter to take a 16-14 lead. The Hornets then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 20-16 advantage. Delaware State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 16 of its 20 points close to the basket.

The Hornets could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 30-28.

Delaware State and Morgan State both put up 15 points in the third quarter, keeping the deficit even at 45-43 entering the fourth. Delaware State played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 15 points in the paint.

The Hornets rallied in the game's final frame, outscoring Morgan State 14-8 and overtaking the Bears for good on a Emily Jones layup with 03:27 left to grab the 57-53 victory. Delaware State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 14 points in the paint. The Hornets held the Bears to only 32.8 percent shooting from the field.
» Delaware State had a great day defensively, holding Morgan State to 14 percent from beyond the arc on 14 attempts. The Delaware State defense forced 16 turnovers. The Hornets were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, recording five blocks as a team.
