Delaware State Falls 79-43 to VCU

RICHMOND, VA --The Delaware State women's basketball team got a 15-point performance from the bench, but fell 79-43 to the VCU Rams on the road Monday.

Ericka Huggins led the Hornets (3-7) with eight points and two steals. McKenzie Stewart added six points, six rebounds and two steals and Mahogany Cottingham helped out with 12 points.

Delaware State forced 16 VCU turnovers. The Hornets turned those takeaways into eight points on the offensive end of the floor. Stewart's two steals led the way for Delaware State.

 

How It Happened

After falling behind 11-10, Delaware State went on a 5-0 run with 4:39 left in the first quarter to take a 15-11 lead. The Hornets then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 23-15.

The Hornets continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 41-20 halftime deficit.

Delaware State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Hornets faced a 61-28 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Delaware State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled four of the team's eight third-quarter points.

VCU kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 73-35 advantage before Delaware State went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Stewart's layup, to shrink the deficit to 73-41 with 3:03 to go in the contest. VCU responded and outscored the Hornets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 79-43. Delaware State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring five of its 15 total points.
