BROOKLYN, NY --The Delaware State women's basketball team fell to the LIU Sharks 65-63 in overtime on the road Saturday.
The Hornets (3-8) had three players score in double figures, led by Kiarra Mcelrath, who had 22 points and three steals. Circe Rubio Remolar tacked on 13 points and seven rebounds and Brooke Barnes chipped in as well with 13 points and three steals.
Led by McKenzie Stewart's six offensive rebounds, Delaware State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 16 boards that resulted in 13 second chance points.
The Delaware State defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 24 LIU turnovers while committing 16. Those takeaways turned into 22 points on the offensive end of the floor. Stewart's four steals led the way individually for the Hornets.

How It Happened
Delaware State started out the scoring by going on a 7-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Rubio Remolar, to take an early lead with 7:33 left in the first quarter. LIU then responded to tie things up at 15-15 heading into the second quarter. Delaware State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 15 points.
Delaware State then started off the second quarter by going on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Barnes, to take a 20-15 lead. The Sharks then came roaring back to take a 29-24 lead heading into halftime.
LIU continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 35-27 advantage before Delaware State went on a 12-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Kiarra McElrath, to grab a 39-35 lead with two seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Delaware State knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 15 total points.
LIU proceeded to take a 52-47 lead before Delaware State went on a 7-0 run to seize a 54-52 lead with 1:27 to go in the fourth. The Sharks then fought back to even things up at 56-56 and send the game to overtime. Delaware State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring seven of its 17 total points.
LIU then edged ahead in overtime, leaving Delaware State behind 65-63 at the final buzzer.
