Hornets Come Up Short to Saint Francis 69-60

Huggins Records Double Double

MEMORIAL HALL, --The Delaware State women's basketball team went into the half beating Saint Francis (PA) 30-26, but could not hang on in the second half and fell 69-60 to the Red Flash at home Thursday.

The Hornets (3-5) had four players score in double figures, led by Najah Lane, who had 14 points. Mahogany Cottingham tacked on 12 points and Kiarra Mcelrath helped out with 12 points from the bench.

Led by Circe Rubio Remolar's five offensive rebounds, Delaware State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 11 boards that resulted in 10 second chance points.

Delaware State did a great job disrupting Saint Francis (PA) shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Nala Abraham led the way individually for the Hornets with two rejections.

 

How It Happened

Delaware State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 18-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Saint Francis (PA) kept adding to that lead, building a 20-12 advantage before Delaware State went on a 12-0 run to take a 24-20 lead. The Hornets kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 30-26 advantage heading into halftime. Delaware State dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 18 points close to the basket.

Delaware State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Cottingham, to expand its lead further to 36-28 with 8:14 to go in the third. Saint Francis (PA) responded to seize a 50-47 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Delaware State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 69-60. Delaware State took advantage of two Saint Francis (PA) turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of those takeaways.

» The Hornets were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, tallying five blocks as a team.
» Delaware State cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 11 offensive boards in the game.
» Delaware State got a team-high 11 rebounds from Ericka Huggins, recording a double-double for her.
