Hornets Come Up Short 79-44 in Loss to Dayton

DAYTON, OH --The Delaware State women's basketball team got a 15-point showing from the bench, but fell 79-44 to the Dayton Flyers on the road Friday.

The Hornets (1-1) had two players score in double figures, led by Mahogany Cottingham, who had 13 points and three steals. Kiarra Mcelrath tacked on 12 points and two steals off of the bench and Circe Rubio Remolar added six points and three steals.

The Delaware State defense was a problem in Friday's game, forcing 21 Dayton turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 11 points on the other end of the floor. Rubio Remolar's three steals led the way individually for the Hornets.
 

How It Happened

Delaware State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 18-9 at the end of the first quarter.

The Hornets continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 31-18 halftime deficit.

Dayton continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 47-26 advantage before Delaware State went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Kiarra McElrath, to trim its deficit to 47-31 with 2:29 to go in the third. Dayton countered and stretched its lead to 58-35 heading into the fourth. Delaware State took advantage of four Dayton turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of takeaways.

Delaware State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 79-44. Delaware State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its nine points in the paint.
