Defensive Effort Pushed Delaware State Over Penn State-Wilkes Barre 111-43

DOVER, DE --The Delaware State men's basketball team held Penn State-Wilkes Barre to just 10.5 percent from 3-point range in a 2-for-19 shooting performance on the way to a 111-43 victory over the Nittany Lions at home Tuesday.

The Hornets (3-4) had four players score in double figures, led by Kaseem Watson, who had 19 points and two steals. Robert Smith added 19 points, eight assists and four steals and Martaz Robinson helped out with 11 points.

The Delaware State offense was very productive from beyond the arc, pouring in nine threes on 19 attempts. Smith was the most prolific shooter for the Hornets, draining four treys in the contest.

Delaware State forced 19 Penn State-Wilkes Barre turnovers while committing just nine themselves in Tuesday's game. The Hornets turned those takeaways into 29 points on the offensive end of the floor. Smith's four steals led the way for Delaware State.

 

How It Happened

After falling behind 9-8, Delaware State went on a 16-0 run with 15:21 left in the first half to take a 24-9 lead. The Hornets then added 18 points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 57-24 advantage. Delaware State capitalized on 10 Penn State-Wilkes Barre turnovers in the period, turning them into 17 points on the other end of the floor.

Following intermission, Delaware State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 89-43 before going on a 20-0 run, finished off by Theodore Pendergrass Iii's three, to grow the lead to 109-43 with 1:14 to go in the contest. The Hornets kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 111-43 win. Delaware State took care of business in the paint, recording 30 of its 54 points in the lane.
