DOVER, DE --Kyra Lawrence hit a dagger shot with 1:46 left in the fourth quarter to put Delaware State up 74-67, and the Hornets earned a 76-73 win over the Bloomfield Bears at home Monday.
The Hornets (3-4) had three players score in double figures, led by Mahogany Cottingham, who had 24 points and three steals. Kiarra Mcelrath added 18 points and two steals off the bench and Ericka Huggins helped out with 10 points off the bench.
McKenzie Stewart pulled down five offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Delaware State, grabbing 18 boards and turning them into 19 second chance points.
Delaware State did a great job disrupting Bloomfield shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Nala Abraham led the way individually for the Hornets with two rejections.

How It Happened
Delaware State started out the scoring by going on a 14-0 run, culminating in a three from Cottingham, to take an early lead with 6:51 left in the first quarter. The Hornets then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 25-10 advantage. Delaware State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down seven shots to account for 21 of its 25 points.
Delaware State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 7:16 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Cottingham, to increase its lead to 36-21. The Bears cut into that lead, but the Hornets still enjoyed a 41-30 advantage heading into halftime. Delaware State dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 16 points close to the basket.
Delaware State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Cottingham, to expand its lead further to 57-44 with 1:55 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Bears had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Hornets still entered the fourth quarter with a 59-49 edge. Delaware State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 18 points in the paint.
The Hornets then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Delaware State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 17 points in the paint.
