DOVER, DE --Gerren Tomlin and Valeria Otero both notched double-doubles to help lead the Delaware State volleyball team to a 3-2 victory (26-24, 22-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-7) over the Howard Lady Bison Sunday on the road at Memorial Hall.

The out-of-conference victory improved Delaware State's overall record to 17-13 on the season.

The Hornets were led by double-doubles from both Tomlin, who had 17 kills and 20 digs, and Otero, who had 18 kills and 12 digs. Aaliyah Mitchell also added 14 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Morgan Allen chipped in for with 22 digs to go with six blocks from Mitchell.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Hornets survived a back-and-forth first set to win 26-24 in a stanza that featured seven lead changes and was tied 13 times. Neither team led by more than four points in the match. got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked six Howard attacks in the stanza.

SET 2 | Delaware State then dropped set two 25-22, tying the match at a set apiece. The Hornets dropped the second set despite a strong performance on the attacking end. Delaware State registered a .361 attack percentage with 17 kills in the set loss.

SET 3 | Delaware State bounced back following the second-set loss to grab set three and a 2-1 lead in the match. The Hornets won the set 25-20 helped by a solid showing on the attacking end. Delaware State put together a .314 attack percentage with 14 kills in the set win. The Hornets opened up a 17-10 lead in the stanza and coasted to victory from there. Delaware State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking seven Howard attacks in the stanza and capitalizing on 10 Howard attacking errors on the way to victory.

SET 4 | Delaware State couldn't finish off a four-set win as the Lady Bison forced a fifth set with a 25-23 victory. The Hornets lost the set in spite of a solid showing on the attacking end. Delaware State put together a .343 attack percentage with 15 kills in the set loss.

SET 5 | Delaware State and Howard went back and forth all game, trading set wins until the Hornets took set five 15-7 and the match. The Hornets grabbed control of the set-five lead at 2-1 and held it the rest of the way. Delaware State ended strong, opening its biggest lead of the stanza, eight points, to close out the set, collecting 10 kills while only committing one attack error along the way.
