NORFOLK, Virginia --Norfolk State fought back from a three-point halftime deficit to defeat Delaware State 38-19 on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans improved to 4-7 on the year and 2-2 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play, while the Hornets fell to 1-10 overall and 0-4 in conference matchups.
Jaden Sutton led all Hornets rushers with 146 yards and one touchdown in the contest, picking up 6.6 yards per carry. Jayden Jenkins also added 27 yards and one touchdown on the ground.
NyGhee Lolley hauled in five catches for 78 yards.
Michel Bergeron led the Delaware State defensive effort, totaling one recovered fumble. Eric Montes added 1.0 TFL and one sack and Team had in the loss.
The Hornets forced one turnover in Saturday's contest, with Delaware State turning that takeaway into three points. The Delaware State offense did a good job keeping drives alive, converting on 40 percent of third-down attempts.
Defensively, Delaware State held up fairly well against the Norfolk State offensive attack, holding the Spartans to 276 total yards.
How It Happened
Delaware State took a 3-0 lead over Norfolk State after scoring the game's first points with 9:42 left in the first quarter.Norfolk State then scored to take a 7-3 lead before the Hornets put a field goal on the board to cut into the lead and make it a 7-6 game.
Delaware State followed with a 10-yard touchdown run at the 6:07 mark in the second quarter and grabbed a 13-7 lead in the process.Norfolk State fought back to take a 31-13 lead, but the Hornets scored again to narrow the gap and make it a 31-19 game. Delaware State didn't score again in the game and Norfolk State tacked on seven more points to finish off the scoring.
