Hornets Secure 3-2 Victory Against NCCU

DOVER, DE --The Delaware State volleyball team took down the North Carolina Central Eagles 3-2 (20-25, 25-23, 25-15, 23-25, 15-12) Friday at home at Memorial Hall.

The conference win improved Delaware State's record to 7-11 overall and 3-2 in MEAC play.

The Hornets were led by a double-double from Gerren Tomlin, who registered 10 kills and 11 digs on the day. Aaliyah Mitchell also added seven kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Morgan Allen chipped in for with 12 digs to go with seven blocks from Alondra Maldonado.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Hornets found themselves in an early hole, dropping the first set 25-20. Delaware State trailed by as many as six points as North Carolina Central never gave up the lead in a set that was knotted up zero times before the Eagles took control.

SET 2 | Delaware State fought back after dropping the first set to take set two 25-23, evening the match at one set apiece. The Hornets trailed by as many as six points, but took the lead for good at 22-21 in a set that didn't have a lead change before the Hornets took over in the second half of the stanza. Delaware State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four North Carolina Central attacks in the stanza.

SET 3 | Delaware State went up 2-1 after defeating the Eagles in the third set. The Hornets scored first and never trailed in the set to earn a 25-15 victory. Delaware State opened up as much as an 11 point lead at 24-13 before closing out the set. The Delaware State offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.

SET 4 | Delaware State couldn't keep the win streak alive, as the Eagles forced a fifth set with a 25-23 fourth-set win. North Carolina Central grabbed the advantage for good at 24-23 and Delaware State wasn't able to recover in a set that was knotted up 11 times before the Eagles took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 5 | Delaware State opened a two sets to one lead and fought off North Carolina Central's comeback attempt, which included a fourth set victory, to win the fifth set 15-12 and the match 3-2. The Hornets endured a back-and-forth final set to emerge victorious in a stanza that featured three lead changes and was tied nine times. Neither team led by more than three points in the set.
