BALTIMORE, MD --Jevin Muniz scored 31 points to help lead the Delaware State men's basketball team past the Morgan State Bears 78-66 on the road Tuesday.
Muniz added six rebounds to his 31 point game to lead the Hornets (9-9, 2-0). Martaz Robinson helped out with 19 points, four assists and three steals and Deywilk Tavarez chipped in with 11 points and three steals.
Led by Wesley Oba's four offensive rebounds, Delaware State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 18 boards that resulted in 13 second chance points.
Delaware State's defense held Morgan State to only 38.3 percent shooting from the field.
How It Happened
After falling behind 5-2, Delaware State went on an 8-0 run with 17:27 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Muniz, to take a 10-5 lead. The Hornets then added seven points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 41-29 advantage. Delaware State capitalized on 10 Morgan State turnovers in the period, turning them into 12 points on the other end of the floor.
Delaware State kept its lead intact before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Muniz's layup, to grow the lead to 51-36 with 14:51 to go in the contest. The Bears narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hornets still cruised the rest of the way for the 78-66 win. Delaware State made the most of nine offensive rebounds to tack on eight second chance points out of 37 total in the period. The Hornets held the Bears to only 38.3 percent shooting from the field. Delaware State had a 49-33 edge on the boards in the win. The Delaware State defense forced 16 turnovers. Delaware State cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 18 offensive boards in the game.
The Hornets will return home Saturday, January 20 when they host University of Maryland Eastern Shores in continued MEAC Conference play. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
