Robinson, Tavarez Combine to Score 43, Delaware State takes down Maryland-Eastern Shore 67-63 in Overtime

DOVER, DE -- In their best MEAC start since 2006-07, Martaz Robinson and Deywilk Tavarez combined to score 43 total points - 64.2 percent of Delaware State's points - in the Hornets 67-63 victory over the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks at home Saturday.

Robinson led the Hornets (10-9, 3-0) with 24 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Tavarez tacked on 19 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals and Jevin Muniz helped out with 13 points and six rebounds.

Alston Andrews pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace the Delaware State offense which grabbed 10 boards and turned them into 14 second chance points.

Delaware State forced 17 Maryland-Eastern Shore turnovers while committing 14 themselves in Saturday's game. The Hornets turned those takeaways into 13 points on the offensive end of the floor. Robinson's three steals led the way for Delaware State.

How It Happened

After falling behind 7-4, Delaware State went on a 12-0 run with 16:54 left in the first half to take a 16-7 lead. The Hornets then added eight points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 35-18 advantage. Delaware State took advantage of seven offensive rebounds to score seven second chance points out of 35 total in the period

Maryland-Eastern Shore proceeded to take a 50-47 lead before Delaware State went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Robinson's jumper, to seize a 53-50 lead with 2:11 to go in the contest. The Hawks then fought back to even things up at 56-56 and send the game to overtime. Delaware State took care of business in the paint, recording 12 of its 21 points in the lane.

Maryland-Eastern Shore then snagged a 63-62 advantage with 52 seconds left in the first overtime before Delaware State responded by going on a 5-0 run to seize a 67-63 lead with 17 seconds to go in the period, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. The Hornets held the Hawks to only 37.3 percent shooting from the field. Martaz Robinson, Deywilk Tavarez, and Jevin Muniz combined to account for 84 percent of the Hornets points. Delaware State had a stellar day defensively, holding Maryland-Eastern Shore to 20 percent from beyond the arc on 25 attempts. The Delaware State defense forced 17 turnovers. Delaware State cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 10 offensive boards in the game.
