DOVER, DE --The Delaware State men's basketball team fell to the South Carolina State Bulldogs 66-64 at home Saturday on Wilson Dubinsky's buzzer-beating 3-pointer as time expired.
The Hornets (10-10, 3-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Deywilk Tavarez, who had 19 points. Jevin Muniz added 16 points and Martaz Robinson helped out with 11 points and six rebounds.
The Delaware State defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 17 South Carolina State turnovers while committing 11. Those takeaways turned into 26 points on the other end of the floor. Dean Shepherd led the way individually for the Hornets with one steal.
How It Happened
After falling behind 34-29, Delaware State went on a 6-0 run with 3:45 left in the first half to take a 35-34 lead. The Hornets then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 36-35.
South Carolina State kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 61-53 advantage before Delaware State went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Muniz's layup, to even the score at 61 all with 1:17 to go in the contest. The Hornets could not turn their rally into a victory, as the Bulldogs outscored them 5-3 the rest of the way to hand Delaware State the 66-64 loss. Delaware State took care of business in the paint, recording 16 of its 29 points in the lane. Delaware State lost on a last-second shot by Wilson Dubinsky. The Delaware State defense forced 17 turnovers.
The Hornets will return home Monday, January 29 when they host North Carolina Central University in continued MEAC Conference play. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
