BETHLEHEM, PA --The Delaware State volleyball team won the first set, but couldn't hold on and lost 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 23-25, 22-25) to the Lehigh Mountain Hawks Friday evening on the road at Grace Hall.
The non-conference loss moved Delaware State to 3-6 on the season.
Alondra Maldonado finished with 10 kills on the day to lead the Hornets attack while finishing with a hitting percentage of .269. Defensively, had four players reach double figures in digs, highlighted by Valeria Otero's 20, 18 from Maria Caratini, and 17 more from Ella Sanders.
Kaulana Kalulu-Sugai had a team-high three aces in the loss. Alondra Maldonado had a team-high of 10 kills for Delaware State. Delaware State got a team-high 20 digs from Valeria Otero.
Delaware State attackers were helped by a team-high 26 assists from Naz Tuncay.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Hornets opened up an early one set to none lead, winning the first set 25-21. Delaware State grabbed the advantage for good at 14-13 in a set that had just one lead change before the Hornets took over in the second half of the stanza.
SET 2 | Delaware State then dropped set two 25-19, evening the match at a set apiece. Delaware State trailed by as many as nine points as Lehigh grabbed the advantage for good at 12-11 in a set that was tied up four times before the Mountain Hawks took over the lead.
SET 3 | A third-set loss put Delaware State behind 2-1. The Hornets fell in a back-and-forth battle, losing 25-23 in a set that featured five lead changes and was tied 10 times. Neither team had a lead of more than two points along the way.
SET 4 | Delaware State lost set four and the match, falling 25-22. The Hornets battled back from a seven-point hole at 20-13, but it wasn't enough as Lehigh held on to win the set.
