BETHLEHEM, PA -- Ella Sanders and Alondra Maldonado both put up double-doubles to help lead the Delaware State volleyball team to a 3-1 win (25-21, 28-26, 21-25, 25-18) over the Binghamton Bearcats Saturday at Grace Hall.
The non-conference win improved Delaware State's overall record to 4-6 on the season.
The Hornets were led by the double-doubles from Sanders, who had 15 kills and 13 digs, and Maldonado, who had 16 kills and 10 digs. Kelsie Dawson added eight kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Valeria Otero chipped in with 16 digs to go with nine blocks from Maldonado.
Delaware State had five players in double figures in digs. Naz Tuncay had a match-high of three aces in the win. Alondra Maldonado had a match-high nine blocks. The Delaware State front row did a great job defensively, picking up 15 blocks in the match. The Hornets never trailed on the way to winning the fourth set 25-18. Alondra Maldonado had a team-high 16 kills for Delaware State. The Hornets got a team-high 16 digs from Valeria Otero. Delaware State attackers were helped by a match-high 28 assists from Naz Tuncay.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Hornets grabbed the first set 25-21 helped by a solid showing on the attacking end. Delaware State put together a .353 attack percentage with 14 kills in the set victory. After the lead changed hands seven times, the Hornets took control for good at 21-20 and rode that advantage to victory. got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked seven Binghamton attacks in the stanza.
SET 2 | Delaware State won the second set 28-26 to quickly jump to a 2-0 lead. The Hornets persevered in a back-and-forth set to win in a stanza that featured two lead changes and was tied 12 times. Neither team led by more than four points along the way. The Hornets racked up 19 kills over the course of the set. Delaware State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking six Binghamton attacks in the stanza.
SET 3 | Delaware State saw its chance for a sweep end when Binghamton took set three. The Hornets came up short by the score of 25-21. Binghamton grabbed the advantage for good at 17-16 in a set that was knotted up seven times before the Bearcats took over in the second half of the stanza.
SET 4 | Delaware State then responded to finish off the match with a 25-18 fourth-set victory. The Hornets led from the opening point on in the set to earn the victory. Delaware State opened up as much as a nine point lead at 24-15 before closing out the stanza. Delaware State got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four Binghamton attacks in the stanza.
Delaware State will return to action on Tuesday, September 12 when they face Long Island University. The first serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
