DOVER, DE --The Delaware State volleyball team cruised to a three-set victory (25-23, 25-16, 25-19) over the Howard Lady Bison Friday at home at Memorial Hall.
The conference win improved Delaware State's record to 9-8 overall and 2-1 in MEAC play.
Gerren Tomlin finished with nine kills on the day to lead the Hornets attack while finishing with a hitting percentage of .304. got 15 digs from Maria Caratini to lead them defensively. Kaulana Kalulu-Sugai had a match-high three aces in the win. Delaware State never trailed on the way to winning the second set 25-16. Delaware State served up five aces on the way to a second-set victory. The Hornets never trailed on the way to winning the third set 25-19. Delaware State attackers were helped by a match-high 16 assists from Kaulana Kalulu-Sugai.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Hornets opened up an early one set to none lead, winning a nail-biter first set 25-23. Delaware State grabbed the advantage for good at 24-23 in a set that showcased two lead changes before the Hornets took over in the second half of the stanza.
SET 2 | After their win in the first set, Delaware State put themselves on the cusp of a sweep with a 25-16 victory in set number two. The Hornets led from the first point on in the set to earn the victory. Delaware State opened up as much as a 12 point lead at 19-7 before closing out the set. The Hornets hit .381 over the course of the set. The Delaware State offense also got a boost from five aces in the stanza.
SET 3 | Delaware State took set three to win in straight sets. The Hornets led from the first point on in the set to secure a 25-19 victory. Delaware State opened up as much as a seven point lead at 23-16 before closing out the set.
Delaware State will return to action on Sunday, October 1 when they travel to Virginia for a match-up against Norfolk State. The first serves are scheduled for 3 p.m.
