Hornets Defeat Morgan State 3-1 After Dropping First Set

BALTIMORE, MD --The Delaware State volleyball team fired back after losing the first set to secure a 3-1 win (18-25, 25-12, 25-14, 25-12) against the Morgan State Lady Bears Sunday on the road at Hill Field House.

The victory boosted the Hornets' record to 8-8 overall and 1-1 in MEAC action.

The Hornets offense was paced by Alondra Maldonado, who finished with 10 kills on the day, and by Ella Sanders, who had 10 while hitting .292. Defensively, had two players reach double figures in digs as Valeria Otero had 12 and Maria Caratini had 12. From the front row, Kelsie Dawson contributed eight blocks and Sanders added five rejections. Maria Caratini had a match-high three aces in the win. Delaware State attackers were helped by a match-high 21 assists from Naz Tuncay.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Hornets fell behind early, losing a tough first set 25-18. Delaware State trailed by as many as seven points as Morgan State grabbed the advantage for good at 11-10 in a set that was tied up five times before the Lady Bears took control.

SET 2 | Delaware State responded to pick up a 25-12 victory in the second set, evening the match at one set apiece. The Hornets grabbed control of the set lead early on at 3-2 and never trailed. Delaware State led by as many as 15 points at 23-8 before finishing off the set.

SET 3 | Delaware State went ahead 2-1 in the match after defeating the Lady Bears in the third set. The Hornets took control of the set early when the score was 6-5 and held the lead the rest of the way to win 25-14. Delaware State ended on a strong note, opening up its biggest lead of the stanza, 11 points, to finish off the set. The Delaware State offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.

SET 4 | Delaware State claimed a match win with a 25-12 fourth-set victory, winning their third straight set. The Hornets took control of the set at 5-4 and held the lead the rest of the way. Delaware State led by as many as 13 points at 24-11 before closing out the stanza. Delaware State got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked five Morgan State attacks in the stanza and capitalized on 11 Morgan State attacking errors on the way to victory.

Delaware State will return to action on Friday, September 29 when they host Howard. The first serves are scheduled for 6 p.m.
