Dover, Del. (May 3, 2023) --- Alondra Maldonado (Patillas, P.R., who led the Hornets to the 2022 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference volleyball championship and first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, along with track and field champion Tayshaun Chisholm (Dover, Del.), were honored as the 2022-23 Female and Male Delaware State Athletes-of-the-Year during an award ceremony last evening.
The Most Outstanding Performer of the 2022 MEAC Volleyball Tournament and All-MEAC First Team honoree, Maldonado was a three-time MEAC Player-of-the-Week, and ranked second in the league in kills, fifth in hitting percentage and ninth in blocks during '22 regular season.
Chisholm captured his second straight ECAC/IC4A championship in the men's indoor 60- meter hurdles with a time of 7.76 seconds, also tying the Boston University Track and Field Facility record. The 2022-23 MEAC indoor hurdles champion, he has also qualified for the 2023 ECAC/IC4A outdoor championships in the 110-meter hurdles.
Also, Delaware State presented its Athletics Director Senior Awards to Ana Ferreyra-Heit of the women's golf team and baseball standout Joseph "Trey" Paige.
In addition to Maldonado, team MVP awards in women's sports were presented to: Ashley Legat (Cross Country & Indoor Track and Field); Saralynne Nassberg (Bowling); Ashley Maribo (Soccer); Catherine Glenn (Outdoor Track & Field):
Uxua Lopez (Softball); Olivia Brown (Equestrian); Noelani Lui (Tennis); Ana Ferreyra-Heit (Golf); Savannah Brooks (Basketball); Ava Larkin (Triathlon) and Sierra Williams (Cheer).
Aside from Chisholm, team MVP in men's indoor and outdoor track & field, other awards in men's sports were presented to: Devin Smith (Cross Country); Trey Paige (Baseball); Brooks Parker (Football); and Martaz Robinson (Basketball).
