SALISBURY, Md. --- The Delaware State baseball team fell in game two of its three-game Northeast Conference (NEC) series with University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) by a final score of 7-6 on Friday.
Â
As the Hornets faced a three-run deficit heading into the top of the fifth inning Delaware State would plate three runs in the frame by way of back-to-back home runs with the first coming off the bat of
Evan Bouldin who scored
Jancarlos Colon on the round tripper to put the away team within one run of a tie game.
Â
The ensuing at-bat would be
Trey Paige who not only tied the game with a solo home run of his own but put himself into elite company by doing so. Paige joins Bret Underwood, Kelly Williams, Scott Martin, Charles Dailey, Ryan Haas, Cameron Cecil, and Aaron Nardone as the eighth member of the program's 200-hit club over the course of a career. Paige's homerun also serves as his 13th of the season which matches his personal season-best with the 13 he hit one year ago.
Â
The Hawks responded with a two-run bottom portion of the inning for a lead that was not conceded for the remainder of the game.
Paige would score on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth inning, but a one run deficit would be as close to a comeback as the Hornets would see as UMES reliver Nick Gatton shut the door on the late rally attempt in the top of the ninth to preserve the win for the Hawks.
Â
Offensively, Colon and Paige paced the offense with a pair of hits each while Bouldin drove in a team-high two runs.
These two teams will complete the series in the rubber match tomorrow afternoon. First pitch of the finale from Henry S. Parker Athletic Complex is currently scheduled for 1 p.m.
