SALISBURY, Md. --- The Delaware State baseball team capped off its 2023 season with an 18-4 Northeast Conference (NEC) loss to University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) on Saturday.
Â
UMES jumped out in front of today's contest scoring the game's first eight runs across the opening four frames of action to establish an 8-0 lead that was never surrendered.
Â
Delaware State scored its only four runs of the game in the away half of the fifth inning. The inning was highlighted by a
Trey Paige three-run home run sent not only over the right field fence but into the playground area behind the baseball field. Paige's home run was his third of the weekend and 14th of the year for a new season-high for his career.
Â
Wilfredo Mendez drilled a single into center field that was deep enough to score
Jordan King from second base to eliminate the possibility of the Hornets being blanked on the scoreboard.
Â
Offensively, Mendez (3) and Paige (2) led the efforts with multi-hit games while Paige drove in a team-best three runs.
Alec Rodriguez tallied a hit as well with a single to left field to kick off the top of the sixth inning.
Â
Delaware State finishes its season with a final record of 13-35 with an 8-22 mark in its first stint in NEC competition.
