Hornets blank Skyhawks in series opener

EASTON, Mass. --- The Delaware State baseball team began its three-game series in Northeast Conference (NEC) competition with an 8-0 win over Stonehill College on Friday.

The Hornets jumped on the Skyhawks early scoring the first four runs in the front third of the game.

A two-run top of the first saw Wilfredo Mendez capitalize on a Stonehill wild pitch followed by an Alec Rodriguez RBI-single to open up the contest.

Jancarlos Colon tripled the Delaware State lead with a sacrifice fly to center field that was deep enough to bring Chris Amparo home for a 3-0 lead through two complete innings.

Trey Paige capped off the early offensive outburst with his eighth home run of year to extend the advantage to 4-0 through the first three innings of action.

Hornets designated hitter Krew Bouldin added two more runs to the lead after he belted a double to left field bringing home both Mendez and Paige for a 6-0 game after the fifth frame.

Delaware State added two more runs of insurance over the course of the eighth and ninth innings courtesy of an RBI-doule from Amparo and another Stonehill wild pitch that allowed Evan Bouldin to score.

Offensively, Paige recorded a game-high three hits at the plate while Amparo and Krew Bouldin both tallied a pair. Krew Bouldin drove in a game-best two runs while Amparo, Colon, Paige and Rodriguez all accounted for the other Hornet RBIs.

On the mound, senior pitcher Jordan Haddaway collected his second-straight win and fourth overall after a seven-inning shutout performance. Haddaway only allowed four walks and gave up two hits in route to the victory. Freshman standout Jack Messmore came in for two innings of relief and only gave up a hit and a walk as he preserved the shutout win for his team and starting pitcher.

Delaware State and Stonehill will complete the NEC series tomorrow with a doubleheader. First pitch of game one (game two of the series) is currently scheduled for 12 p.m.
