Hornets rally in late innings of game two for a DH split with Seahawks

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. --- The Delaware State baseball team split a pair of Northeast Conference (NEC) contests to Wagner College in a doubleheader on Sunday.

Game One: Wagner 14, Delaware State 6

After Wagner plated seven runs across the game's first four innings, Delaware State began to claw back in the middle portion of contest.

Trey Paige flew out to left field just deep enough to be able to score Jordan King in the top of the fifth and avoid the shutout.

The Hornets would then go on to score four runs in the sixth highlighted by a Wilfredo Mendez three-run home run over the right field wall to bring the Seahawk lead down to two for a 7-5 game through the top of the sixth frame.

A two-run deficit would be as close to the lead as Delaware State saw in game one as Wagner scored seven more runs in the later third of the matinée to ensure the game one win.

Offensively, the Hornets were led by Robert Trujillo who recorded three hits while Mendez and Paige notched a pair each. Mendez drove in a team-high three runs while Paige, Trujillo and Jancarlos Colon all tallied an RBI in the game.

Game Two: Delaware State 14 – Wagner 13

Facing an eight-run deficit through six complete innings, Delaware State began to claw its way back into game. After a Mendez leadoff triple to start the seventh, Nick Gnardellis brought Mendez home with an RBI-double to cut the gap to 11-4. A couple batters later, Brady Daniels placed a fly ball deep into center field to score Gnardellis for cutting Wagner's lead down to 11-5. During Evan Bouldin's at-bat, Paige stole third and then came around to score after Evan recorded a sac fly and bring the Hornets closer for an 11-6 game through the top half of the seventh.

Wagner plated its final two runs of the nightcap in the bottom of the seventh for final the Seahawk lead of the contest.

A seven-run eighth frame began when Jancarlos Colon and Jordan King drew back-to-back walks followed by a single by Mendez to load the bases for Mason Brewer. Colon, King and Mendez captalized on a Wagner wild pitch that allowed Colon to score with King and Mendez advancing further into scoring position with the game now at a 13-7 score. Brewer drilled a 2-RBI single into center field to score King and Mendez with only four runs left to make up.

A few batters later, Krew Bouldin's at-bat forced a Seahawk error that allowed him to reach first base safely with Brewer advancing to third. Daniels drew a walk during his at-bat to load the bases for Evan Bouldin. Evan also drew a walk to score Brewer as the Hornets closed the gap by three runs for a 13-10 game with only one out in the inning.

Trujillo made his at-bat count with a 2-RBI double down the left field line scoring Daniels and Krew Bouldin to bring the Hornets within one. As the Hornets batted around this inning, Colon's second at-bat of the frame forced another Seahawk error that allowed Evan Bouldin to score at tie the game at 13, capping off the seven-run comeback.

In the top of the ninth inning, Evan Bouldin would approach the plate once again with the bases loaded. Evan Bouldin would reach first base on a fielder's choice allowing Tre'Zhan Selby to cross home plate for a 14-13 lead which proved to be the game-winning play of the night cap.

The offensive outburst was led by Mendez and Paige who led the team with three hits each while Daniels recorded a pair of hits and walks.

Chris Amparo and Evan Bouldin drove in a team-best three runs each while Brewer and Trujillo tallied a pair of RBIs apiece.

On the mound, Hunter Thompson came out of the bullpen and threw two innings of no-hit baseball to keep Wagner off the board to secure the doubleheader split. His win on the mound marks the first of his collegiate career.

Delaware State returns to action on Tuesday for a midweek nonconference contest at Rider University. First pitch is currently scheduled for 3 p.m.
