Hornets suffer walk-off loss to Seahawks

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. --- The Delaware State baseball team suffered a 5-4 walk-off loss to Wagner College to open the Northeast Conference (NEC) series on the road on Friday.

Wilfredo Mendez who led the Hornets with a pair of RBIs in the game, recorded his first one of the day by way of a single to right field that allowed Jordan King to score from second to cut the Seahawks' lead to 2-1 through five innings.

Mendez's second RBI of the afternoon came after he placed a single down the left field line to bring home Jancarlos Colon for a 3-2 Delaware State lead to complete the Hornet half of the seventh frame.

After Wagner tied the game at 3 to complete the seventh inning, Alec Rodriguez drilled a single down the right field line to score Trey Paige for a 4-3 Hornet advantage after the top of the eighth.

The Seahawks plated two unanswered runs in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings to seal the home victory while preventing the contest from spanning into extra innings.

Paige paced the offensive efforts, tying for a game-high three hits in the game while Mendez and Krew Bouldin each recorded a pair of knocks each.

Delaware State will aim to even the series tomorrow when the two teams meet again. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
