Newark, N.J. (Feb. 4, 2023) --- MEAC rival Morgan State got a measure of revenge for a loss to Delaware State last week, topping the Hornets 75-65 at the Michael B. Jordan led HBCU Legacy Classic at the Prudential Center today. Kamron Hobbs came off the bench to lead all players with 24 points on nine-for-15 shooting from the field, including four-of-eight on three-point shots, for the Bears. Reserve
Khyrie Staten led three double-figure scorers for Delaware State with 17 points.
Brandon Stone and
Martaz Robinson added 16 points each for the Hornets. The loss snapped a three-game win streak for Delaware State, its longest since the 2016-17 season, which fell to 4-17 overall this season. Morgan State snapped a two-game skid to improve to 12-11 overall. A consolation for the Hornets is the game did not count in the MEAC standings. Delaware State was plagued by 21 turnovers in the contest, leading to 29 points for Morgan State. "Morgan did a good job of speeding up the pace from last week's game, forcing us into numerous turnovers and rushed shots," said Delaware State head coach
Stan Waterman. "It's tough to win a game with that many mistakes, but we'll learn from the experience and work to finish strong this season. I also want to thank the Legacy Classic for the amazing experience and the opportunity to represent Delaware State and all HBCUs on such a grand scale."
Delaware State started strong in the game, opening up a 7-0 lead on a free throw by
Jevin Muniz, who scored four of the points. Morgan State tied the score at 12 on a basket by Daiquan Copeland at the 10:37 mark of the first half. After the Hornets held their final lead of the game, 29-28, on a basket by Staten, the Bears outscored Delaware State 14-5 the rest of the half to lead 42-34 at the break. Morgan State led by 17 points on two occasions in the second half, the last time at 56-39 on a follow-up basket by Lewis Djonkam with 14:19 left to play. The Hornets answered with an 8-0 run, and pulled to within 56-47 on a fast break bucket by Staten at the 12:19 mark of the second half. Stone scored six of the eight points during the rally. Delaware State could get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.
The turnovers overshadowed the Hornets' slight edge in shooting and rebounding in the game. Delaware State was 22 for 55 from the field (40.0%), while Morgan State hit 30 of its 77 shots (39.0%). The Hornets outrebounded the Bears 43-42. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
