Hornets rally in late innings to claim an 8-4 win over Lancers

FARMVILLE, Va. --- The Delaware State baseball team claimed an 8-4 win over Longwood University in the Sunday finale of the three-game series.

As the Hornets entered the top of the eighth inning needing three runs to tie and four to take the lead, Chris Amparo got the inning going with a single to left field to get on base. Two batters later, Trey Paige moved Amparo over to third base on a single to the gap in left center. Evan Bouldin brought Amparo home by way of a sac fly to cut the deficit down to 4-2 with two out in the inning.

Delaware State used a little "two-out magic" as the Hornets were given three free bases by way of three-straight walks. The third walk drawn by Brady Daniels, allowed Paige to score and bring Delaware State to within one as Alec Rodriguez came to the plate.

Rodriguez placed a single in right field just deep enough to bring home Krew Bouldin and Wilfredo Mendez to put a 5-3 lead in Delaware State's favor to cap off a four-run eighth inning.

The Hornets added three runs of insurance in the ninth after Paige drilled an RBI-single to left center, Mendez placed an RBI-sac fly into center field and K. Bouldin lifted an RBI-single over to right field.

Offensively, Amparo, Evan Bouldin, Paige and Rodriguez all recorded multi-hit games in the win. Paige led the hitting efforts with three while Amparo, Evan Bouldin and Rodriguez all grabbed a pair each. Rodriguez led the scoring efforts with a game-high two RBI's highlighted by what proved to be the game-winning 2-RBI single in the eighth inning.

On the mound Evan Harris tallied six of the team's seven total strikeouts while Jordan Haddaway and C.J. Loper tossed three innings of shutout baseball to preserve the win.

Delaware State will hit the road on Tuesday for a midweek matchup with University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). First pitch is currently scheduled for 3 p.m.
