NEWARK, DE --Ja-Naiah Perkins-Jackson scored 31 points and Savannah Brooks added 20 and the Delaware State women's basketball team took down the Wilmington (DE) Wildcats 108-39 on the road Wednesday.
The Hornets (2-6) had four players score in double figures, led by Perkins-Jackson, who had 31 points. Brooks added 20 points, four assists and two steals from the bench and Denijsha Wilson helped out with 17 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Delaware State grabbed 53 rebounds in Wednesday's game compared to Wilmington (DE)'s 28, led by 10 boards from Tyshonne Tollie. The Hornets also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 24 rebounds into 26 second chance points.
The Delaware State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Wednesday's game, forcing 34 Wilmington (DE) turnovers while committing 14. Those takeaways turned into 44 points on the offensive end of the floor. Tollie led the way individually for the Hornets with four steals.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 22-16 advantage, Delaware State went on a 6-0 run with 50 seconds left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Deyonce Thompson, to increase its lead to 28-16, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Delaware State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 28 points close to the basket.
Delaware State built that first quarter lead to 37-24 before going on a 10-0 run starting at the 4:35 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Perkins-Jackson, to increase its lead to 47-24, a score that would hold until halftime. Delaware State forced 11 Wilmington (DE) turnovers in the period and turned them into 12 points.
Following intermission, Delaware State continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 57-30 before going on a 16-0 run, punctuated by a three from Perkins-Jackson, to expand its lead further to 73-30 with 2:06 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Hornets added four points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 80-33 edge. Delaware State knocked down six three-pointers in the quarter to score 18 of its 33 total points.
Delaware State kept its lead intact before going on a 17-0 run, finished off by Perkins-Jackson's three, to grow the lead to 99-36 with 5:09 to go in the contest. The Hornets kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 108-39 win. Delaware State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 28 points. The Hornets shot well from three point range, knocking down 15 of 32 long range attempts. The Hornets held the Wildcats to only 26.9 percent shooting from the field. Delaware State tallied 24 total assists in the game. Ja-Naiah Perkins-Jackson hit seven threes and Savannah Brooks knocked down five more to lead a Delaware State shooting attack that had two players sink five or more shots from beyond the arc. The Hornets turned 34 turnovers into 44 points on the offensive end. The Hornets forced 34 Wilmington (DE) turnovers while committing only 14 on the other end. Delaware State had a 53-28 edge on the boards in the win.
The Hornets return to action Sunday, December 10 when they travel to West Virginia University. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
