Delaware State Falls to West Virginia Sunday Afternoon

MORGANTOWN, WV --The Delaware State women's basketball team got a 14-point showing from the bench, but fell 107-43 to the West Virginia Mountaineers on the road Sunday.

Tyshonne Tollie led the Hornets (2-7) with 15 points. McKenzie Stewart also tacked on four points and nine rebounds off the bench and Denijsha Wilson helped out with eight points and two steals.

Delaware State forced 13 West Virginia turnovers. The Hornets turned those takeaways into 11 points on the other end of the floor. Wilson's two steals led the way for Delaware State.

How It Happened

Delaware State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 37-7 at the end of the first quarter.

The Hornets continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 55-13 halftime deficit.

Delaware State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Hornets faced an 87-24 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Delaware State turned one offensive rebounds into two second chance points on the way to scoring 11 total points in the quarter.

West Virginia kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 97-33 advantage before Delaware State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Kiarra McElrath's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 97-38 with 3:45 to go in the contest. West Virginia responded and outscored the Hornets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 107-43. Delaware State took advantage of three West Virginia turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways. The Delaware State defense forced 13 turnovers.

The Hornets return to action Thursday, December 14 when they travel to Baylor University. Tipoff is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
