DOVER, DE --The Delaware State women's basketball team shot 50 percent from three-point range on the way to an 84-59 victory against the LIU Sharks at home Monday.
The Hornets (1-6) had four players score in double figures, led by Savannah Brooks, who had 20 points and two steals. Kiarra Mcelrath tacked on 19 points off of the bench and Denijsha Wilson helped out with 17 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Wilson pulled down six offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Delaware State, grabbing 15 boards and turning them into 14 second chance points.
The Delaware State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Monday's game, forcing 22 LIU turnovers while committing 10. Those takeaways turned into 34 points on the offensive end of the floor. Noami Zulueta led the way individually for the Hornets with three steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 14-8, Delaware State went on a 5-0 run with 1:56 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Kiarra McElrath, to narrow its deficit to 14-13, a score that would hold for the rest of the period.
Delaware State chipped away at that deficit and built a 22-18 lead before going on an 11-0 run, highlighted by a three from Kiarra McElrath, to increase its lead to 33-18. The Hornets proceeded to tack on two points to that lead and enjoyed a 37-20 advantage heading into halftime. Delaware State forced five LIU turnovers in the period and turned them into 10 points.
Delaware State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a three from Deyonce Thompson, to expand its lead further to 51-31 with 5:04 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Sharks had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Hornets still entered the fourth quarter with a 61-44 edge. Delaware State played well near the basket, scoring 16 of its 24 points in the paint.
Delaware State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 67-48 before going on an 11-0 run to grow the lead to 78-48 with 3:59 to go in the contest. The Sharks narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hornets still cruised the rest of the way for the 84-59 win. Delaware State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 23 points in the paint. The Hornets made half of their attempts from three point range, knocking down seven of 14 shots. Delaware State never trailed in the second half on its way to victory. The Delaware State bench made an impact by scoring 44 points to its scoring output. The Hornets turned 22 turnovers into 34 points on the offensive end. The Hornets forced 22 LIU turnovers while committing only 10 on the other end. Delaware State had a 35-29 edge on the boards in the win.
The Hornets return to action Wednesday, December 6 when they travel to Wilmington University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
